There are very few jewelers who have diplomas from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), or the American Gem Society (AGS). These are the two most respected institutes in the industry and receiving a diploma from them is the most difficult there is. Both organizations actively enforce the use of their titles. It is perfectly legal, although misleading, to advertise that you are a “Gemologist” without having any training whatever. However, to use the title Registered Jeweler (RJ), Graduate Gemologist (GG), Certified Gemologist (CG), or Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA), without having received the diplomas from the organizations is illegal.

The Registered Jeweler (RJ), title is earned by individuals who have successfully completed the required course work and classroom study of diamonds, colored gemstones, and ethics. The title must be renewed annually by examination.
The Certified Gemologist (CG), title requires advanced study in diamonds and colored stones as well as testing procedures. This title also must be renewed annually.
The Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA), title is the most highly respected in the industry. Earning the CGA title requires additional advanced training and experience in determining the value of gemstones and jewelry. All CGA titleholders must pass annual recertification exams.
